A word from Our Executive on Haiti

As we have all seen in the news, a devastating earthquake hit Haiti on January 12th.  We have witnessed an incredible response of governments, relief organizations and the church community. American Baptists have a long history of mission work in Haiti and partnership with the Haiti Baptist Convention.

I am asking that if you receive funds for Haiti Earthquake relief in your church or if you want to give as an individual, that you would give through our American Baptist channels of support.  All that you or your church give will be given to those ministries and churches that we have a relationship with in Haiti.  Your gifts will bring relief and rebuilding to Baptist churches, members of those congregations and the people that these churches are serving.

Here are some recent updates about what is happening in Haiti:

  • The Baptist World Alliance has released a statement about a Baptist pastor who died in the quake and how several churches are being impacted by this tragedy.  Click here for details.
  • International Ministries (IM) missionaries Steve and Nancy James returned to Haiti on January 14 to work with our partners in distributing immediate relief assistance and to decide what our longer term response can be.
  • Kristy Engle, IM missionary in the Dominican Republic, is working with our partners there to put together a medical team that will travel across the border in the next few days.
  • International Ministries has designated $25,000 from One Great Hour of Sharing funds to provide for immediate relief materials and response.
  • The next $15,000 will pay for medical and relief kits and blankets from Church World Service supplies in the Dominican Republic.

International Ministries needs immediate financial gifts to purchase, transport and distribute additional relief supplies including food, tarps, water and medical supplies.  In the next weeks and months there will be a need for additional funds for the recovery and rebuilding phase. This will include providing long term care for orphans and rebuilding homes, school, clinics and churches. There will be work teams in the recovery and rebuilding phases. Check for updates at www.internationalministries.org

Updates on the American Baptist response to the Haiti earthquake can also be found at the American Baptist New Service.

Missionaries safe after HAITI EARTHQUAKE.

A 7 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. with devastating results. (See http://news.bbc.co.uk/ for details.)

American Baptist missionary families serving in Haiti with International Ministries were in the United States at the time. Steve and Nancy James are returning to Haiti immediately and Kihomi Ngwemi and Nzunga Mabudiga are on a planned U.S./Puerto Rico home assignment.

$25,000 in One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) funds will be made immediately available to the Haitian Baptist Convention, IM’s partner in Haiti.
The death toll in affected areas has not yet been determined.  International Ministries, along with our HBC partners are conducting an assessment of the crisis.  Please check our website regularly for updates.  www.internationalministries.org

Haiti, a nation of 9 million people, is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere.  It is about the size of Maryland and is on the western half of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic.  IM missionaries in the Dominican Republic are safe and report no damage in their areas.

Pray for Haiti and its people.
    • Pray for the proper response of the world to this tragedy.
    • Pray for believers in Haiti to shine forth the love of Christ in this time of desperate need.
